There seems to be a lot of new backlash over Slaughterhouse on the internet these days. Let's face it, you've heard the best work from your favorite artist (especially a rapper) before he or she signs to a major label. Once signed to a label, you can be assured that the styles will change to appeal to a wider audience. The problem with groups or artists like Slaughterhouse is that they were not built to appeal to the masses. Slaughterhouse is not meant for the radio public.
I think this album will disappoint early fans and not impress the radio public. The album numbers might be good, but there's no way they can keep both their core fans and the radio fans going forward. Tracks like My Life and Throw It Away (which I can't believe made the album cut) have already showed how dumbed-down the lyrics are compared to older Slaughterhouse material. Our House Ft. Eminem & Skylar Grey, Rescue Me Ft. Skylar Grey, and Place To Be Ft. B.o.B, will all probably sound like they belonged on Eminem's latest album, Recovery. I would have been happier with no features at all.
I hope I'm wrong, but this album is not shaping up to be what we imagined when Slaughterhouse signed to Shady Records. We already saw what it did to Yelawolf on his latest album and we should probably expect the same results. Rappers blame the labels and the labels blame the rappers. The reality is that it's usually more on the artist than on the label. It all comes down to the money. As soon as the artist tastes a little bit of radio fame, they run with it and compromise their style. Then when it's no longer working, they put the blame on the label. Of course the labels aren't innocent. All they care about is the bottom line, but it's up to the artist to stick to his style.
In conclusion (ha), welcome to: OUR HOUSE will disappoint the core fans and do mediocre with the the radio fans. The numbers might be decent, but it's going to be hard for them to get back to their true lyrical form, which is where they belong. Unfortunately, it won't stop here, so enjoy your favorite artist now before he or she signs on the dotted line. Black Hippy might be next...
