LA Weekly's Top Five Compton Rap Anthems
West Coast Sound, over at LA Weekly, recently put together a list of their top 5 Compton rap anthems. Check out numbers 5, 4, and 3 below and click the link to get the top 2.
5. DJ Quik "Born And Raised In Compton"
A proud hometown calling-card, the ever-underrated DJ Quik paints a picture of a place that's infested with "jackers and the crack," while also recounting how some nefarious type broke into his crib and "cold stole" his musical equipment. Quik raps that he got the last laugh though, by bouncing back and slapping some "bass in your face" on the "motherf**ker silly sucker" -- although he's cautious enough to warn that "Sometimes I have to wear a bullet-proof vest/ Because I got the C.P.T. sign written across my chest."
4. Kendrick Lamar "Compton State Of Mind"
Yeah, it's technically just a riff on Jay-Z's New York City anthem, but new generation Compton spitter Kendrick Lamar represents for his city's heritage with more conviction than most, as he asserts that, "I've always been out here/ Since the Compton Swap Meet/ Black and red LA Gears/ 'Pac was on Rosecrans." But whereas his Compton forefathers often focused on the nefarious side of the city, Lamar's outlook on life is positively uplifting, as he pleas, "Please don't come shoot up my party/ I just wanna have fun." Increase the peace!
3. The Game Ft. Will.i.am "Compton, Compton"
Fittingly for a man with an N.W.A. tattoo emblazoned on his chest, Jayceon's fierce ode to the city of Compton is peppered with references to Dr. Dre and his cronies, plus the conviction that when you walk through Compton you can still feel Eazy-E's spirit at large. And for once a Will.i.am cameo works. Bonus rap history marks for a reference to "We're All In The Same Gang."

When Kendrick Lamar speaks of his critically acclaimed project in this manner, you get a sense of sincerity in his voice. The Compton, California representative has received rave reviews from various publications, including ours. He’s also garnered support from other emcees, veterans and newcomers alike. Hip Hop legends like Snoop Dogg, Kurupt and Dr. Dre have all cosigned Lamar’s talent. So, what’s next?
Before moving forward, K. Dot understands it’s always crucial to look back and to look within. During this exclusive interview with HipHopDX at the request of guest editor Game, Kendrick spoke as to why he wants to let Section.80 settle for some time before unveiling the newer projects he has in the stash. He also spoke on how various life experiences have informed his writing and about what it’s like to run with the West Coast’s baton.

Kendrick Lamar: It was crazy, man! You know, I always admired Game’s work ethic, as far as being a student of the game, like myself. So, when he finally called me to be on The R.E.D. Album, that was a blessing for me, just off the fact that somebody I admired in the game would reach out and extend their hand to do me a favor to put me on the intro, not just a track, but the intro. That says a lot because it sets the tone for what he’s talking about. I’m privileged to be side by side with a rapper like that. I felt that it was a song that was necessary. I’m from Compton, he’s from Compton. I’m the young one coming from Compton. He was basically saying, here, take this and run with it. That’s how the track felt. It was real.

DubCNN: Exclusive Interview With Game (Video)
Dubcnn had the fantastic opportunity to catch up with Game a few days before the release of his long awaited fourth solo release, the "R.E.D. Album". Game talks to us about the possibility of making a "Watch The Throne" for the West Coast, shooting the "Pot Of Gold" video with Chris Brown, and how he really could care less what people think of him or what they say about him.
Dropping on August 23rd 2011, R.E.D. marks Game's reunion with mentor Dr. Dre, who narrates the album, and Game explains his role to us.
He also speaks on working closely with Lil Wayne and the possiblity of joining Cash Money Records. He touches on Interscope's stance on the "R.E.D. Album" after the numerous pushbacks and the role Pharrell played as the executive producer.
