So I got this idea last year and I wanted to see if I could actually follow through with it the whole year. I wanted to do a Hip-Hop Yearbook. Starting with 1989, every month, release a new mix for a new year. Jan is 89, Feb is 90, etc. Now I know what I’m getting myself into with all the Hip-Hop nerds out there. You guys are gonna tear me apart (selection wise). “How did you not put ____ on the 1990 mix?!” I’m just picking songs that I currently have in my Serato, give me a break. I’m sure there’s gonna be songs that I’m missing, but f**k you. I’m doing the mix, NOT YOU! You’re also gonna say, “But that song wasn’t released in 89!” For example, “Fight the Power” was on Fear of a Black Planet and that came out in 1990. Yes, it was. It was also on the Do the Right Thing Soundtrack though, which was released in 1989. Anyway, enough explaining. I’ll post a new mix (hopefully) at the end of every month until the year is over. Last Wednesday before his show at 330 Ritch with Blu, I got to chat with one of my favorite producers, Exile. We spoke about the craziest thing he ever sampled, his second album with Fashawn "The Ecology", a new project as Emanon with Aloe Blacc and a Dag Savage project (including a free mixtape beforehand). We also spoke about working early with Miguel, his phone call with Jay Electronica, and his fascination with the radio.

About the LP:
It's a synth-laden instrumental hip-hop album, with 13 instrumentals and one song featuring two guest emcees, James Vega and Otayo Dubb. All beats were done on an MPC 2500. Mastering was done by Deeskee.

Malkovich & P.U.D.G.E. - Lethal Vice EP
Los Angeles rapper Malkovich and NYC producer/rapper P.U.D.G.E. proudly present Lethal Vice, a free three-song EP where the duo invoke the spirit of Lethal Weapon and Miami Vice's buddy-cop duos to tell some true L.A. stories. Vice is produced almost completely by P.U.D.G.E., who made his name alongside experimental beatheads like Dibia$e and Samiyam at L.A.'s Low End Theory weekly. Ali Baba Abnormal, Sum and Chris Clarke appear on the posse cut "Flatfoots". Aaron Godfred (responsible for the 2010 movie Little Blue Pill) directed Vice's 'multi-music video trailer', which rolls videos for all three songs into a movie trailer advertising the EP.
"P.U.D.G.E. and I lived together in L.A. for a while," says Malkovich. "Lethal Weapon was in our DVD player a lot and we noticed parallels between Mel and Danny and us. He’s the black guy, I’m the white guy. He’s more laid back, I’m more aggro. And we spent a long time together just trying to get by in L.A."

Murs is cerebral and complex. The term "real" gets thrown around a lot but Murs is as real as it gets. We sat down with him and he talked with us about what shaped him in becoming an MC. He covers everything from the impact of Eazy-E and LL Cool J to growing up in a Crip neighborhood to Oreo cookies. He even shares that he was laughed at the first time he wrote a rhyme. Before his show last night in SF I got to sit down with Blu and talk about a few things. We spoke about working with Quelle and Chuuwee on songs dropping later this year, the status of his "UCLA" project with Madlib and the idea behind the song "Doin Somethin" with U-N-I, Pac Div, TiRon, Ayomari, J*Davey etc. We also spoke about his newest release "Give Me My Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them" including
the reason for the "un-mastered" sound, if there will be a mastered version and why the tracks were from 2009. In addition, we spoke about
the samples he's chosen for Exile, the many more songs from "No York" and hard copies of "Below The Heavens". (Again, I sincerely apologize
for the quality of this video, the Exile one will be much better on Friday).
Slaughterhouse Announce New Album & Tour
The Slaughterhouse crew have announced their Shady Records debut album. The album will be titled, welcome to: OUR HOUSE, and will be released on May 15th. It will be executive produced by Eminem. You can expect the first single off the album to drop sometime next week.

You know how you can love an artist and their music so much, you think ‘there’s no way this person can be that awesome in real life.’ Well, Kendrick Lamar actually is awesome in real life. His music and his state of mind are completely one. When Kendrick invited me over to the studio, I was excited to feel how his lyrical energy would translate. And let me tell you, conversation flowed as easy as his raps do. We discussed everything under the sun, from being crowned King of the West by Snoop Dogg, his Black Hippy movement, talks with Mos Def and Dr. Dre, and goals he’s still trying to reach. But of all I’ve learned about the California native, what stuck with me the most, is his modesty and humbleness. So what’s next for this Compton creative? Lamar says his debut album has a concept he’s been working on his whole life. “I’m gonna really tell the story of how a good kid was in a bad state… I held a lot of things back in interviews and in my music because I want to share it on a bigger scale.” So besides sweet stories told in song, Kendrick tells us; “It’s only gonna get better, I’m putting that in the universe right now.” And I think we all hear him.
